Electro-solar boat | Combines ecology and innovation

The Sunsailer 7.0 is the first electro-solar boat to be built by the SunConcept company, in Olhão. The system of this boat, which is seven metres long and capable of accommodating up to seven people, which can be driven by anyone with a “carta de marinheiro” (sailor’s licence), allows for noise-free use, with no water pollution and no fuel costs. “It is essentially about demonstrating a concern for the environment,” says Jorge Severino, the partner responsible for the technical side. Owners can also install a sail or an igloo tent system.

With two, six-horsepower electric outboard motors, the boat can reach a maximum speed of seven knots (12 kph) and a cruising speed of five knots (8 kph). The six solar panels charge the four 500 amp/12 volt batteries, allowing you to sail for nine hours with no sunshine.

The boat is built of polyester resin, an oil-based material for which no recycled material is available yet. The lifespan of these boats is estimated to be up to 40 years. The basic model is on sale for 39,900 euros; the “bed and igloo” kit can be added for around 4,000 euros, and the “sail and mast” kit for 5,000 euros.

One of the innovative solutions that SunConcept is working on is a specific model for the fisheries sector. “Just imagine that in the lagoons of the Ria Formosa, you could reduce or completely eliminate the use of petrol/diesel engines by professionals. The boat could be used all year round at zero cost,” Jorge Severino said.
