If I had to explain the word ECO to a child, I would tell him or her that the expression comes from the word ECOLOGY which basically means “friend of the environment”.
I would also have to explain that, in one way or another, all the actions that we humans perform have consequences for the environment that surrounds us, that is for plants, animals, the air we breathe etc. … because we are all connected and we all share the same home, which is our planet earth.
Obviously, I would also have to talk about pollution and its consequences, and I would tell them that we can all make a difference if we take greater care with our actions, which involves very simple things, such as separating rubbish at the eco-containers, choosing to buy more environmentally-friendly products (those that have the word ECO on the label) or recycled products, and also trying to avoid wasting water and electricity.
“Have you ever imagined a world without flowers, without trees or water, with no oxygen for us to breathe?… What would become of us? If we continue to destroy, and use up natural resources unchecked in order to satisfy our lifestyle and our comfort, soon our human species will be on the verge of extinction. It would be very sad!”
In short, as in our homes, we are all responsible for our planet and we must take good care of it. We must respect the environment and live in harmony with nature so that we can live more happily and leave a healthier and more sustainable planet for future generations.
