La Belle Verte

Education is the accompanied acquisition of physical, emotional, personal, social, intellectual and practical skills by children that are prerequisites for all members of a culture. In ancient Greece, education meant both intellectual and ethical training and guiding people towards contemplating life’s big questions. What mattered here was the attainment of excellence and the outstanding quality of their social and civic skills.

Therefore education involves the act of one person, who knows the way, taking another by the hand, showing them that way and actively accompanying them. Every kind of education functions according to this model, environmental education too.

With us at “La Belle Verte” in Monchique, environmental education starts even during pregnancy; at the latest, however, after delivery. We follow the ancient tradition – whenever possible – of bringing our offspring into the world at home, and of planting a tree for every new-born child.
For this, we look for native fruit trees at the local nursery in the knowledge that most of them already bear fruit after five or six years, which can then be enjoyed for the next 50 to 60 years.
So, a few days after delivery, we set off with a hoe and spade in one hand and a bucket with the placenta in the other. This is buried in the earth under the tree, which is named after the new-born child. In doing so, we lay two of the most important building blocks of environmental education in the life of this new addition to the human race: permaculture and composting. Nothing organic is lost or wasted. And can one wish for a better environmental education than going to the tree the following spring holding one’s child by the hand and saying: “Oh, look at all the bees on the tree’s beautiful blossom. There will certainly be wonderful fruit this next autumn.”

Mas alguns talvez se perguntem: “É tudo muito bonito, mas que tem isso a ver com o Natal e o inverno?”
Ora, não foi há 2014 anos o nascimento de um bebé, que anos mais tarde ficou conhecido como o “carpinteiro de Nazaré”, e que fundou o cristianismo? E não é nesta época que, todos os anos, milhões de pessoas celebram este dia como uma festa de alegria com presentes dos quais, a maioria, no dia do Ano Novo já são “notícias do ano passado”?
E que tal se nós este ano – por amor ao carpinteiro – ou também por amor a nós próprios ou a uma pessoa que nos seja querida, plantássemos uma árvore, para criar algo duradouro, uma fantástica contribuição para a educação ambiental e para ajudar a mãe Terra, a respirar um pouco melhor?

Goethe disse uma vez: “E se amanhã também o mundo se acabasse, plantaria ainda hoje uma macieira.” Ora, eu imagino que em 2014, para variar, não vamos investir os 10 a 20 euros, numa árvore artificial, abatida, feita de pseudo-madeira que é pretensiosamente chamada de árvore de Natal, mas sim numa árvore de maçãs, viva, duradoura, com raízes e tudo à volta! Pois então – e disto estou convencido – o mundo não se acabará amanhã! De qualquer forma, em nossa casa este ano vão cavar-se alguns buracos: a minha mulher espera a quinta criança para o Natal. E, para além disso, a mudança de ano é a melhor altura para se plantar. Felicidades…
