The Algarve is Portugal’s sunniest region, where most of the country’s fruit is grown and harvested: oranges, mangoes, kiwis, grapes, avocados and much, much more… Bananas!
The umbrella organisation APCOI (Associação Portuguesa Contra a Obesidade Infantil – Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity), which is concerned about obese children in schools all across the Algarve, has launched an initiative called ‘Fruit Heroes’. This news is already quite interesting and impressive in itself, but the organisation is also concerned that the World Health Organisation’s targets in relation to this matter are not being met at all in Portugal. It is therefore hosting an information event on Sunday 17 May at the Armação de Pera Town Hall from 2 pm to 6 pm, designed to promote this project. Unfortunately, the question of whether poor eating habits are being practised in schools or at home will not be under discussion.
Debating whether meat or fish should be considered an essential part of children’s diets would likely put many interested parties off. After all, the event is not meant to be a political affair. That would also require providing information about a vegetarian or even a vegan diet. Here, the focus is solely on the subject of fruit.
One question, however, is important: would you, as parents, grandparents or siblings, like to collaborate in APCOI’s “Fruit Heroes” project in the Algarve? If your answer to this question is yes, then the APCOI umbrella organisation is the right place for you: Yes, I firmly believe that it is important to promote healthy eating among children, and I would like to help…
The Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity is looking for volunteers in the Algarve region who would like to take part in a special initiative as part of the “Heróis da Fruta” project.
